In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs has announced a month-long multimedia campaign, themed “Women and Girls in the Digital Environment”.
Aimed at boosting their participation and representation in the digital sector, the initiative will leverage various media channels.
Marked annually, the day serves as a rallying point for the global women’s rights movement, driving discussion and action on themes like gender equality, reproductive rights and violence against women.
Established by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in 1977, the day has become a global celebration, observed by individuals and organisations worldwide.
The ministry stated that Cambodia launches a drive every year to commemorate the struggle for equal rights and freedom, while reflecting on the positive progress, commitments and measures made in promoting equality and empowering all women and girls.
In collaboration with key players across government, civil society and the private sector, this year’s efforts will highlight the need for women and girls to safely and effectively participate and be represented in the digital world.
“This year’s campaign tackles social development in the digital age, aligning with government goals to promote gender equality and empower women and girls,” the ministry said.
Eng Chandy, executive director of Gender and Development for Cambodia (GADC), said the theme is extremely relevant, as it highlights the challenges women and girls face in the digital landscape and underscores the government’s strategy to empower them through participation.
“Many Cambodians are unfamiliar with the term ‘digital transformation’, making the project crucial for promoting both gender equality and digital literacy. GADC is proud to join forces this year, advocating for both gender-inclusive and interconnected digital development,” she added.
