Promoting metrology provides many benefits and is key to attracting investors to develop the industrial sector in Cambodia, officials said as they marked World Metrology Day on May 20.
The day was observed this year under the theme “Measurements Supporting the Global Food System”, in response to the growing challenges of climate change to world food supply.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, the date was chosen to commemorate the signing of the Metre Convention on May 20, 1875. At that time, representatives of 17 countries signed.
The Convention provides the basis for a global harmonised measurement system that supports scientific discovery, and the innovation of international industrial and commercial products, as well as improving the quality of life and global environmental protection.
According to the ministry, this year’s theme was chosen due to the growing challenges of climate change and global food supply. The world’s population reached eight billion by the end of 2022.
“Promoting the metrology sector is definitely the key to attracting investors to develop the industrial sector in Cambodia. In addition, the sector provides additional benefits,” it said.
The ministry said the additional benefits include ensuring fair and accurate trade, making the use of metrology instruments accurate and fair, and ensuring fairness between the suppliers and consumers of products and services.
“It also ensures the improvement of the quality of goods, products, services and management, eliminates technical barriers to harmonised trade activities and improves other sectors like health, safety and the environment. Metrology also facilitates the development of science and technology for the sake of economic growth,” it added.
Metrology refers to the science and management of weights and measures. Especially today, metrology is one of the most important fields.
It is also the backbone of science, technology and innovation, and provides customers with trust and confidence in the products of small and medium enterprises.
