The “Heart Surgery Project’ at the National Paediatric Hospital was officially launched on Sunday, January 8, with the aim of providing congenital heart surgery services to Cambodian children — particularly children from disadvantaged families who lack the financial means to access treatment on their own.
The Ministry of Health explained that the project is being implemented through a partnership between the hospital and the Cambodian Health Professionals Association of America (CHPAA), with collaboration from cardiac surgeons from the US, alongside Cambodian medical teams.
The project will run for three years and focuses on providing heart surgery services, patient screening and follow-up care, training Cambodian doctors and healthcare staff, transferring advanced medical technology and building local human resource capacity to ensure the long-term sustainability of paediatric heart surgery programmes in Cambodia.
Thanks to the launch of the project, parents and guardians are able to bring children with heart conditions for examinations, consultations and treatment. This enables the hospital’s specialist medical team to conduct accurate diagnoses and prepare patients for ongoing treatment and heart surgery as needed.
Presiding over the event, first lady Pich Chanmony expressed her pride in the new project. She encouraged doctors, nurses and staff to continue strengthening their professional capacity and medical ethics in serving the mission of saving the lives of Cambodian children.
“This project will help treat children with congenital heart disease, provide a brighter future for every child and bring smiles to entire families,” she said.
She also expressed her deep gratitude for the dedication and commitment of doctors, nurses, caregivers, and all hospital staff who contribute to the future and well-being of Cambodian children and wished the project smooth implementation and continued success.
