Minister of Justice Koeut Rith has called for a youth law debate to be held every year, saying it would be a highly effective way to demonstrate the capabilities of young people in the legal profession.
Koeut Rith made the remarks on July 17 at the final of the firs-ever youth debate in the profession, which was organised by the ministry.
The debate, open to civil servants and contract officials under the ministry as well as court clerks and bailiffs under the age of 45, was organised in three phases – an interview, a demonstration of ability, and a question-and-answer session.
“This debate programme serves as a forum for knowledge and a place for young people to adeptly demonstrate their abilities and talents.
“It is also a way to cultivate the bamboo shoots of Cambodian youth in the law and justice sectors,” said Koeut Rith.
The minister said he would like to see the youth debate held every year, as well as other programes that would give young people in the legal profession the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge.
Am Sam Ath, deputy director of rights group LICADHO, said that while the youth debate is a positive step, more should be done to improve the legal and judicial system.
“If we do not care for the bamboo shoots that become the vine, how can we strengthen our legal system and the judiciary into an independent system that guarantees social justice as well as justice for the victims?
“We need to take good care of the bamboo stalks so that the vines can grow well,” Sam Ath said.
