The Ministry of Environment has reported that it prevented the discharge of more than 15,890,000 cubic metres of untreated wastewater from January to October of this year. Among the total, approximately two million cubic metres was stopped in October alone.
Ministry spokesperson Khvay Atitya stated that the prevention of the discharge of untreated wastewater to avoid environmental pollution was carried out in accordance with the Environmental and Natural Resources Code of Cambodia.
As of October 2025, a total of 61 enterprises, companies and factories have signed environmental protection agreements. Among them, 48 have installed automated monitoring equipment and data management systems for wastewater discharge at their respective sites.
“So far, factory and enterprise owners have continuously participated in installing automated monitoring equipment and wastewater data management systems to collectively prevent improper wastewater discharge, which can pollute public water sources, harm the environment and affect citizens’ livelihoods,” he said.
Atitya noted that this achievement aligns with the government’s policies and strategies, in preventing and reducing public water pollution.
Furthermore, the Environmental Sector Strategic Framework, implemented in line with phase one of the seventh-mandate government’s Pentagonal Strategy, promotes three main pillars: Cleanliness, Greenness and Sustainability.
Regarding the “Clean” pillar, the ministry has launched campaigns and implemented actions to make Cambodia clean on land, in water and in the air. For water cleanliness, it has integrated campaigns to prevent the discharge of polluted wastewater into public water bodies and the environment.
The prevention of wastewater discharge that causes environmental pollution is legally stipulated in Cambodia’s Environmental and Natural Resources Code, notably in Articles 178, 287, 288 and 829, which concern the release of waste or pollutants into the environment in violation of wastewater discharge standards, as well as in Article 845, which addresses failure to fulfil obligations related to wastewater and sewage management.
In addition, the monitoring, reduction, and prevention of public water pollution are also provided for in other relevant legal and regulatory instruments of Cambodia.
