Pailin provincial governor Ban Sreymom has launched a “Donation Home” aimed at offering food and essential supplies to the needy. The province welcomes donations from individuals from various backgrounds.
Sreymom explained on October 17 that this initiative’s purpose is to cultivate a culture of generosity and charitable acts, promoting assistance to the less fortunate. It serves as a hub for both receiving and distributing aid to those in need, including impoverished individuals and migrants.
She clarified that although the provincial authorities initially designated the donations for the needy, the project has proven beneficial to everyone. Both those in need and displaced persons can access essential items such as food, clothing and materials. The facility is situated in front of the provincial hall.
“The creation of this resource centre doesn’t imply that Pailin residents are poor. Rather, we are extending assistance to people from other provinces who have come for medical care. This initiative serves as a valuable lesson in fostering a culture of sharing and support among our community,” she explained.
She noted that during the trial phase, people from various backgrounds have visited the service point to obtain food and materials. If any issues arise, the provincial authorities and the working group will assess and make necessary improvements.
Yong Kim Eng, president of the People Centre for Development and Peace, expressed his support, saying it is commendable since he has observed that sharing among the community has become less common than in the past.
He emphasised that over the years, many needy individuals relied on local pagodas for food, whereas now they can access sustenance through sharing within their village and mutual assistance.
“I advocate for the continuation of this practice in the long term, as it has the potential to evolve into a tradition, which would be beneficial. It is essential that the items received through donations are handled transparently to prevent any appearance of corruption,” he stated.
He pointed out that there is a considerable number of individuals eager to engage in charitable activities. Therefore, it is necessary for the provincial authorities to maintain efficient organisation to ensure that all contributions made by philanthropists effectively reach those in need.
The inauguration of the “Donation Home” took place on October 16. The facility is open to individuals facing challenging economic circumstances, providing them with access to food and goods. Each eligible family can obtain one package of items.
