Authorities in Sihanoukville have taken action to address the issue of trucks using the Prek Treng beach as an unregulated parking area, noting that it has led to a decline in the beach’s aesthetic appeal.
Lim Pheaktrey, public administration officer at the Sihanoukville Municipal Administration, explained that authorities have prohibited vehicles and seller’s carts from the sidewalks and beachfront area. This measure was implemented to maintain order and ensure the safety of tourists visiting the area.
In response to reports of numerous large trucks at the location, authorities intervened to educate drivers about the necessity of keeping the beachfront clear, preserving the site as a vacation spot for visiting tourists.
“Sihanoukville authorities have instructed all truckers to remove their vehicles,” he said.
He cautioned that should such incidents recur, police would temporally seize vehicles or carts, requiring owners to resolve the matter through legal action.
Sim Panha, a heavy truck driver, highlighted the challenges faced by big rig operators without dedicated parking locations. While some large companies have their own suitable facilities, many others must wait near the terminal to load cargo, struggling to find adequate space.
Panha explained that Prek Treng became a preferred resting place due to its ample open area, offering haulers an opportunity to relax and eat meals before proceeding to the docks.
“Some drivers are unable to find parking spaces and resort to using the beachfront for temporary layovers. There are limited facilities in Sihanoukville. If we park on the roadside, we may be fined by the police, so it’s a big issue,” he said.
He added that those who arrive early could secure spots at the loading areas, whereas those who come later must seek alternatives.
“In the past, a nearby crab market provided enough parking but it’s since been fenced off, making it exceedingly challenging for us,” he said.
