The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has shared plans for a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to promote the development of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Cambodia.
The plan was discussed during a December 17 meeting between labour minister Heng Sour and Chong Leong Fatt, ITE deputy director.
The minister praised past cooperation with Singapore’s ITE, noting that over the past decade, this cooperation has yielded tangible results in training and capacity-building for Cambodian leaders and TVET technical instructors.
“This cooperation has strongly supported the labour and vocational training sector, achieving significant progress in the development of technical and vocational education and training, which forms the foundation for developing a skilled workforce that meets labour market needs and attracts investors,” said a ministry statement.
Sour expressed confidence that the meeting would strengthen and expand cooperation between the ministry and ITE.
Leong Fatt reaffirmed ITE’s commitment to supporting the development of TVET, with a focus on improving training quality, strengthening institutional management, excellence in teaching and enhancing workforce attractiveness, to maintain regional competitiveness.
He shared his appreciation for the ministry’s proactive cooperation and expressed pride in observing Cambodia’s broad development across nearly all sectors. He also showed strong interest in learning more about the ministry’s priority missions, particularly TVET education and training standards in Cambodia.
In 2017, the ministry and ITE signed a previous MoU on cooperation in the TVET sector, under which 80 Cambodian technical instructors were trained over a two-year period (2017–2018) in three fields: Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Electronics Technology, and Automotive Technology.
In addition, during a four-year cooperation period from 2010 to 2013, ITE trained and shared expertise with more than 550 Cambodian officials, including management-level personnel, leadership trainees and technical instructors specialising in teaching methodologies.
