‘Modernisation of the postal sector requires full participation in order to contribute to the development of e-commerce and the economy,” stated Ek Vandy, secretary of state for the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications during a World Post Day celebration on October 9.
The event, held under the theme “Together for Trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future”, drew leaders, officials, ministries and stakeholders, according to the ministry.
Vandy noted that the day marked the 149th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) formation on October 9, 1874, detailing the significant role of postal services in serving people and fostering global socio-economic development.
He explained that this year’s theme aims to promote greater collaboration among postal operators and key players, fostering trust and strengthening the postal sector.
“The full implementation of digital technology and transformation within the postal sector is imperative to foster the growth of e-commerce and facilitate economic diversification in Cambodia,” he emphasised.
He also expressed his expectation that this year’s theme will inspire UPU members to bolster collaboration as a unified global postal network.
He also noted that this occasion spotlights the significance and dedication of policymakers, regulators, service providers and users in fostering a robust partnership for the advancement of the national postal sector.
On October 10, Lim Heng, vice-president of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC), mentioned the necessity for the ministry itself to take a leading role in adopting digital technology within the sector. He highlighted that the current industrial transformation is progressing towards a digital revolution.
“Digital technology, particularly within the postal sector, plays a crucial role in regional and national economic competitiveness. The telecommunications services’ provision of cutting-edge digital technology is indispensable. Without it, we could incur significant economic losses both regionally and globally,” he said.
He stated that in pursuit of postal sector enhancement, he will urge the ministry to guarantee transparency, efficiency and equitable competition in services nationwide so as to attract additional enterprise investors to regions across the country.
According to the ministry, in alignment with the advancement and adoption of digital technology within the postal sector, the seventh mandate will prioritise the government’s three key directives: digital government, digital economy and digital human resources. This focus is intended to facilitate e-commerce development and bolster economic diversification.
