The Department of Environment in Mondulkiri province has issued an appeal to citizens who are illegally mining for gold — most of them small-scale, family operations — within protected natural areas to immediately stop their activities, in order to avoid life-threatening risks and legal consequences. The invasive species Mimosa pigra, commonly known as Vietnamese thorns, has been cleared from more than 100 hectares of the Boeung Prek Lpov landscape protection area in Takeo province. At least 10 fires occurred across Cambodia during the three-day Khmer New Year celebrations from April 14 to 16. Four people were reportedly injured, although no lives were lost, according to an April 17 statement from the National Police’s Fire Prevention, Extinguishing and Rescue Department. At least 26 people died in the 30 serious traffic accidents that were recorded during the three-day celebration of the Traditional Khmer New Year, The National Police’s Department of Traffic Police and Public Order reported that 5 of the 26 fatalities were women.
