More than 70,000 improved cooking stoves — which reduce wood use by over 65 per cent — and water purifiers will be distributed free of charge to residents in communities in protected natural areas by the end of 2026. Their distribution is part of a $40 million investment project to support efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to Cambodia’s national goal of carbon emission reduction. The plan was announced during the signing of the “Free Distribution of Improved Cookstoves and Water Filters to Citizens” memorandum of understanding (MoU) between representatives of the SIPCO company and Mean Som An, chair…
On April 6, North Korea hosted its annual Pyongyang Marathon, with participants from 46 countries, including Southeast Asian nations like Thailand and Vietnam. Alongside this event, North Korea is also preparing for major tourism events, such as the opening of the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone in June. These efforts signal the regime’s continued push to attract foreign visitors and boost its tourism industry. However, this push for tourism should be viewed with caution. While the North Korean regime is promoting its tourism sector as a source of economic revenue, the reality is that much of the foreign currency generated from…
The use of sand from the ocean and all coastal regions in construction is prohibited. This type of sand contains a higher salt content, warned authorities, and this can cause steel to corrode quickly, thereby affecting the quality of construction and compromising safety. The Preah Sihanouk Provincial Administration has notified sand depot owners, ready-mix concrete businesses, and the public that, in accordance with the construction law, the use of all types of coastal sand is prohibited. “To ensure safety and ensure the quality of construction projects, to protect human lives, and to maintain public order and security, the provincial administration…

They were arrested by a specialised anti-drug unit from Phnom Penh and the Northeast Regional Task Force in an April 2 operation at the Mekong River Bridge in Stung Treng town’s Pachong village, in Preah Bat commune. The bust followed a careful investigation, explained an April 9 statement, released by the Anti-Drug Department. The…
The Ministry of Interior has issued a directive instructing all provincial authorities along the Thai border to take action against any individuals who attempt to extort “service fees” from Cambodian workers returning home for next week’s Khmer New Year festivities. In an April 8 notice, interior minister Sar Sokha noted that large numbers of Cambodians currently living and working in Thailand usually travel back to their hometowns for the Khmer New Year, celebrated from April 14 to 16. Most of them are expected to return to Thailand after the holiday. This situation could lead to congestion at border checkpoints and…
The Ministry of Environment is working with national authorities to identify a group of heavily armed poachers who engaged in an April 5 shootout with rangers in a Mondulkiri wildlife sanctuary. The rangers were patrolling the Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary when they encountered the group of four to six, riding motorcycles inside the protected area. Immediately upon being challenged, the suspected poachers opened fire with Kalashnikov-style rifles. The rangers responded with their own weapons. In a more than two-minute-long video of the ensuing shootout – released by the ministry on April 8 – at least 40 shots can be heard. On…
