In a sweeping attempt to reassert American economic dominance, US President Donald Trump announced a new wave of punitive tariffs on imports from virtually all trading partners – tariffs that spare no one and threaten to upend the post-war international order the US itself helped to build. Under this plan, China faces a 54% tariff on all exports to the US, followed by Cambodia (49%), Vietnam (46%), Sri Lanka (44%), Bangladesh (37%), Thailand (36%), Indonesia, and Taiwan (32%), India (29%), South Korea (25%) and Japan (24%). These “tariffs” are said to be based on non-reciprocal trade practices such as discriminatory…
Members of forest communities have expressed growing concerns about the continued loss of Scaphium affine trees, which are felled for their fruit. Known as Samrong, or malva nut trees, their fruit is widely used in traditional medicine across the region. The Ministry of Environment has urged all relevant authorities to pursue the strictest legal measures and prevent the unlawful felling of Samrong trees. The call for action comes after the ministry observed a noticeable rise in the felling of these trees for their fruit — particularly during the current fruit-harvesting season — in community forests, protected areas and even national…
Since US president Donald Trump announced new “reciprocal tariffs” for countries around the globe, more than 50 countries have reached out to the US for negotiations, including Cambodia. The goal is to reduce the level of tariffs imposed on goods imported to the world’s biggest economy. Cambodia, which was hit with 49%, the highest in ASEAN, has proposed reducing tariffs on US goods to as low as 5%. The Post sat down with Lor Vichet, vice-president of the Cambodia Chinese Commerce Association (CCCA), to understand more on what can be done to improve the situation. Could you briefly describe Trump…

A tour party of journalists and tourism industry insiders were recently granted a look behind the scenes of one of the Kingdom’s most exclusive resorts. More importantly, they discovered some of the ways the management of the site are contributing to the sustainable development of the Kingdom’s wild spaces. Evidence seized from illegal logging activities in the Cardamom Mountain region are proudly displayed at Shinta Mani Wild, an exclusive VIP eco-resort in the jungles of Preah Sihanouk province. Popular with well-to-do domestic and international “glampers” – with accommodation reaching over $3,000 per night for a couple – the resort is…

Local and national authorities are urging residents around the Tonle Sap Lake to end the use of illegal fishing gear and instead use temporarily approved equipment while awaiting the formal implementation of a new fisheries law. This push follows findings by authorities at both the local and national levels that many fishermen have been using illegal fishing gear, including illegal gill nets, electric shock devices and oversized or prohibited traps, particularly in the Tonle Sap area. Tea Kim Soth, head of the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, stated on Tuesday, April 1, that nearly 140 cases…
