The exchange rate of the Cambodian riel against the US dollar maintained better stability in 2025 than the past few years, appreciating by more than 1% compared to 2024, according to the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC). The current armed conflict in the Middle East, which has led to the temporary closure of airspace at major airports in the Gulf region, has resulted in the temporary suspension of connections between Cambodian international airports and several in the Middle East. Global geopolitical tensions and the negative impacts caused by Thai aggression along the Cambodia–Thailand border have led to a noticeable decline in the number of international tourists visiting the Angkor Archaeological Park in early 2026. According to Angkor Enterprise, between January and February, a total of 188,885 tickets to the park were sold, a 32.45% fall from the same period in 2025. Despite Cambodia’s civil aviation sector facing numerous challenges in 2025, state revenue collection did not decline, reaching more than $50 million—an increase over 2024. The 2025 annual performance report and 2026 action plan of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), released February 27, showed that in 2025, the SSCA collected a total of $51.26 million in state revenue, equivalent to 101.32% of the target set in the 2024 Finance Law. Uncertainty in global economic growth, protectionist policies by major powers and Thailand’s cross-border military aggression all played a major role in the disappointing recovery of Cambodia’s construction and real estate sectors in 2025, according to the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC).
