The European Union has welcomed the ceasefire agreement signed between Cambodia and Thailand, urging both sides to fully implement the deal in good faith. In a December 27 statement, EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Anouar El Anouni noted that the bloc appreciated ASEAN’s positive role in helping achieve the agreement. “The EU welcomes the ceasefire agreement signed today by Cambodia and Thailand and calls on both sides to implement it in good faith,” he said. He added that the EU stands ready to provide any necessary support to ensure lasting peace.

Since November 18, a specialist endangered fish team has tagged and released 13 Mekong giant barbs, a critically endangered freshwater fish species, back into their natural habitats over the past month. This conservation work has been described as “protecting Cambodia’s national identity and ancestral heritage”, as images of the fish are carved in the bas-reliefs of the Bayon and Angkor Wat temples. Park rangers and community members have reported the discovery of a dead female wild elephant and a newborn calf in the Preah Roka–Chheb Wildlife Sanctuary, Preah Vihear province, on December 23. The deaths have been attributed to Thai shelling or airstrikes. Both were found dead in the O’Skach stream. The mother had extensive shrapnel wounds, believed to have been caused by Thai munitions. Shelling and airstrikes by the Thai military killed 21 Cambodian civilians and wounded at least 83 as of 6pm on December 22. The Ministry of Interior announced the death of a displaced civilian in Oddar Meanchey province, with three additional civilians injured in Banteay Meanchey province. Cambodia has achieved improvements in education services at all levels, particularly in early childhood education, where enrolments among five-year-old children increased from 10 to 70 per cent.
