The Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) has sent a letter to Volker Türk, UN high commissioner for Human Rights, issuing an urgent appeal regarding the unlawful detention, ill-treatment and only partial repatriation of 20 Cambodian soldiers by the Thai armed forces. The Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation received more than $22 million in funding in the first half of the year, a slight increase over the same period in 2024. However, virtually the whole amount has been used to provide free medical services for children. EOD specialists from the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) have identified nine additional sites of Thai aerial bombing, it reported today, July 31. Four were craters where bombs had exploded, while five contained unexploded munitions, warned CMAC director-general Heng Ratana. “I can confirm that all of the sites are the result of MK-84 bombs which were dropped by the Thai air force between July 24 and 28,” he said. The Ministry of Environment has reported that in the first half of the year, it identified almost 30 factories that were illegally discharging untreated wastewater into public water sources. It noted that at least 1,366,560 cubic metres of liquid waste were illegally discharged. The illegal dumping has damaged the environment and impacted local communities. The discoveries were made during environmental inspections by the ministry’s General Directorate of Environmental Protection. Inspectors found that these companies and factories were releasing, on average, 227,760 cubic metres of liquid waste per month, or approximately 11,388 cubic metres per day.
