Police are hunting for a group of criminals who attempted to abduct a Chinese man in Kandal province on March 3. The victim leapt from a moving vehicle to escape, in a scene which went viral on social media. The national police confirmed that the attempted kidnapping was genuine. A modified van carrying about 20 cubic metres of luxury hardwood timber – with an estimated value of around $10,000 – was intercepted in Kratie province on March 3, despite being reportedly escorted by another vehicle which aimed to warn the van driver of the presence of authorities. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has reshuffled officials at weigh stations across the country to strengthen the efficiency of their operations. The latest restructuring took place on March 1 and 2, and covered checkpoints in six provinces. The initiative aims to reduce plastic usage and its environmental and public health impacts. Remittances sent back to the Kingdom by Cambodian workers abroad increased to approximately $2.95 billion in 2024, with about 1.38 million Cambodians working overseas. A February 28 statement from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training noted that the ministry found work opportunities for 44,862 people abroad, including 17,270 women. In the same year, 18,561 Cambodians (including 6,934 women) returned home. Nearly 60,000 mangrove trees have been planted in Koh Kong province since the beginning of last year. Additionally, more than 20,000 saplings are currently being cultivated to support further reforestation efforts, aimed at protecting coastal areas and biodiversity. A young boy and a girl were tragically killed in a fire that broke out at around 4.00pm this afternoon, February 28. The incident occurred on National Road 5 in Phsar Touch village, in Phnom Penh’s Toul Sangke 1 commune, according to the Phnom Penh Fire Prevention and Rescue Office. Police discovered that the fire was caused by an unattended gas cooker. The affected area was a makeshift shelter where homeless people were living. Experts from the Ministry of Environment and their international partners have discovered 67 fossil sites in 13 provinces since 2019, with plans to conduct further in-depth studies on some of the fossils. On Friday, February 28, the ministry shared that the Department of Heritage Sites, under the General Directorate of Local Communities, began fossil research in 2019 and has since identified 67 fossil sites.
