A fire completely destroyed a mattress factory and warehouse in the capital’s Samraong Krom commune of Por Senchey district at around 5pm yesterday, February 27. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and no casualties were reported. The Jasmine company facility – a brick structure which covered over 2,000 square metres – was owned by a 58-year-old Cambodian man identified as Hong Pong Meng. The Ministry of Environment and the UNDP signed the “Improvement of Disposal Capacity of Plastic Litter in Urban Areas” policy document on February 27. The aim of the new collaboration is to enhance sustainable plastic waste management in the capital and six provinces. The February 25 discovery of a newborn Irrawaddy dolphin has brought this year’s total births to four. No deaths of the rare species have been reported in 2025. In a year-long traffic law enforcement campaign in 2024, authorities fined a total of 11,6308 drivers across the Kingdom. Fines equalling 26.230 billion riel (over $6.5 million) were issued. Of them, 21.914 billion riel (over $5.4 million) has been paid, according to the 2024 annual road safety report by the National Road Safety Committee (NRSC). Demerit points and license suspensions were issued to 124,734 drivers, just 22,857 of them women. The local animal population is reportedly struggling during this exceptionally water-scarce time of year.
