More than $14,000 had been donated to American-born forest activist Ben Davis as of Monday, February 24, to support his ongoing efforts to protect over 50,000 hectares of forest, particularly from the threat of wildfires during the current dry season. Satellite imagery shows that between 30,000 and 40,000 hectares of forest have already burned, primarily due to human activity. Key bridges used for transportation have also been destroyed by fire. More than 4,000 confiscated motorcycles will be publicly auctioned after being seized as evidence or recyclable assets by the Phnom Penh and Preah Sihanouk municipal and provincial courts. On February 21, the Commission for the Management and Disposal of Evidence announced that it would hold a public auction for 4,544 motorcycles. Among them, 4,076 motorcycles were from the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, with a base price of $122,280, while the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court has 468 motorcycles up for grabs, with a base price of $14,040. Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth paid a visit to Khnong Phsar Mountain, part of the Cardamom Mountain National Park, located in Ta Sal commune, Oral district, Kampong Speu province, on Sunday, February 23. The fossilised remains of arthropods and timber were recently discovered by Ministry of Environment officials in Koh Kong province. Laboratory analysis has suggested the site may be up to 65 million years old. According to the ministry, a research team from the Department of Heritage Areas conducted a field study and collected sample specimens at Koh Moul, in Koh Kong district’s Koh Kapi commune, the site of last year’s discovery of a fossilised turtle. Extensive emergency response drills which simulated a plane crash were conducted at Phnom Penh International Airport this morning. The February 21 exercises were organised by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) to enhance preparations for potential aviation disasters, and ran from 7am to 12pm. A delegation from the Saving Asia’s Vultures from Extinction (SAVE) association visited the “mobile vulture restaurants” in the Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary on February 20. The Anti-Drug Unit, in collaboration with Bavet Police in Svay Rieng province, conducted a series of raids in Bavet town which targeted a drug trafficking operation. The February 13 and 14 raids netted a substantial haul of narcotics and also led to the seizure of five handguns. Three of the river guards who are responsible for protecting the Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin conservation area were dismissed by the Kratie provincial administration on February 19. The provincial agriculture department uncovered evidence that the three had allowed fishermen to use electric shock devices in the conservation area, in exchange for undisclosed personal benefits. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries confirmed their dismissal on February 20.
