Following a late-night altercation with a senior official from the Royal Academy of Cambodia at an alcohol breathtesting checkpoint in Phnom Penh, two senior police officers have been relieved of patrol duties until further notice. A mango processing factory in Kampong Speu province has been issued with fines and ordered to restore a water source after being caught discharging polluted wastewater into a nearby stream. The KRR Processing Food Co., Ltd, factory, in Phnom Sruoch district’s Yay Mao Pech Nil commune, was inspected by a team from the Ministry of Environment, as well as the provincial environment department, on February 19. Based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Environment, the Cambodian government has announced that it will implement EURO 5 fuel standards to help improve air quality and reduce climate change. A January 31 statement from the Office of the Council of Ministers, made public today, revealed that the government has agreed to implement the EURO 5 standards, or fuel with a sulfur content of less than 10 parts per million (<10ppm), starting this year. The first “Peace Mangrove Festival” will be held over a three-day period in Koh Kong province, with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of mangrove forests and promote future collaboration for their conservation in Cambodia. Last week, a fire destroyed approximately 15 hectares of the Phnom Tamao forest protected area, which houses the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre and zoo. Conservationists expressed the belief that the fire was set deliberately, possibly by a cooking fire burning out of control, or individuals attempting to smoke bees out so honey could be collected.
