The Ministry of Environment has ordered the Kiridangrek Company to construct wastewater containment and treatment systems by February 17, after a fire destroyed thousands of plastic water pipes at a storage site. The February 6 fire is believed to have been caused by the burning of rubbish. The fire broke out at plastic pipe storage site belonging to Kiridangrek Company, which is responsible for implementing the wastewater drainage system for Battambang city. A camera-trap biodiversity survey conducted between January and August 2025 revealed the presence of remarkable diversity of 42 species in Ratanakkiri province’s Virachey National Park, including some species that are critically endangered globally. This year’s traditional “Leung Meak” community fishing event drew thousands, with a much larger yield of fish caught by participants, who used traditional methods to catch the fish, in Siem reap province’s Boeung Bangkong lake. Authorities in Pursat province have seized nearly 400 items and detained three suspects in connection with forestry crimes, following a series of patrols conducted in January, officials said. The provincial Department of Environment said it worked with Royal Gendarmerie officers and partner organisations to crack down on illegal activities related to forest and wildlife exploitation across the province. The “Heart Surgery Project’ at the National Paediatric Hospital was officially launched on Sunday, January 8, with the aim of providing congenital heart surgery services to Cambodian children — particularly children from disadvantaged families who lack the financial means to access treatment on their own. The Ministry of Environment has claimed that in January, it prevented the discharge of more than two million cubic metres of wastewater from industrial sources in Cambodia, largely thanks to the legal measures it has enforced. The ministry reported that approximately 70,875 cubic metres of polluted liquid waste per day — equivalent to more than 2 million per month — from factories and enterprises were intercepted and prevented from polluting the environment.
